Andrzej Dragan is a known Polish portrait photographer who has developed a special style which not beautifies the models, but instead add pictures an evocative dramatic expression. He's website can be found here. http://andrzejdragan.com/
There are more descriptions on the web, that describes how the effect can be achieved in Photoshop. In the following. I will describe a simple way to achieve the effect in Photoshop CC. |

First open the portrait and select Image – Adjustments - Levels
|
|
The arrow that controls the shadow moves to 40
|
|
Then select Image – Adjustments - Hue/Saturation.
|
|
Saturation are moved to – 45 and Hue på 7.
|
|
Then select Image – Adjustments – Curves.
There is added 3 spots on the line. The 2 lower are pulled down a little, the top a bit up.

Select Layer – Duplicate Layer.
|
|
Select As Backgrund Copy
|
|
Select Filter - Other – High Pass
|
|
Klick OK.
|
|
Right mouseklick on Backgrund copy and select Blending Option.
|
|
Of Blend Mode select Overlay and move Opacity to 50%.
|
|
Right click again on Background copy and choose Merge Down.
|
|
Select Dodge Tool and set Exposure to 50% to 65% and paint the eyes lighter.
|
|
Then select Burn Tool and paint shadows darker.
|
|
Then select Image - Adjustment - Color Balance
|
|
Often Andrzej Dragan's color images has a green / yellow tint. This is handled by moving sliders, to green and yellow.

Then select Filter – Sharpen – Unsharp Mask.
|
|
The desired sharpness are adjusted and the image is finish.
